New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi added a touch of symbolism and humour to his election campaign in Kerala after sharing a video of an unusual encounter with ‘Yamaraj’ during a bus journey in Balussery.
The Congress leader, who is campaigning for the United Democratic Front (UDF), posted the video on social media platform X on Wednesday. In the clip, Gandhi interacts with a man dressed as ‘Yamaraj’, the Hindu God of Death, in what appeared to be a promotional activity highlighting the alliance’s proposed healthcare initiative.
Referring to the interaction, Gandhi remarked that ‘Yamaraj’ did not seem pleased to see him or other UDF leaders, joking that the alliance’s ambitious health insurance scheme could put him “out of work.”
The proposed Oommen Chandy Health Insurance Scheme, named after former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, promises health coverage of up to ₹25 lakh for every household in the state.
“Our mission is simple — no family in Kerala should ever have to face the financial burden of a medical crisis,” Gandhi said, emphasising that the scheme aims to ensure dignity, financial security, and access to healthcare for all citizens.
In the video, the character of ‘Yamaraj’ humorously acknowledges that improved healthcare coverage could lead to longer lives, reducing his role.
The UDF has also announced a set of welfare measures under its “five guarantees” campaign. These include free bus travel for women, ₹1,000 monthly assistance for college-going girls, and an increase in welfare pensions to ₹3,000 per month. Additional promises include interest-free loans of up to ₹5 lakh for small businesses.
Kerala is scheduled to go to the polls on April 9, with counting set for May 4.
