New Delhi, April 2, 2026: The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) is set to roll out performance scorecards for health insurers and empanelled hospitals, aimed at improving claims transparency and accountability. The initiative is expected to be implemented by June 2026.
The scorecards will rank health insurers and hospitals based on key metrics including claim settlement speed, billing transparency, and documentation standards. The move is designed to help policyholders make informed choices while encouraging better service quality from insurers and hospitals.
IRDAI officials said the initiative addresses persistent challenges in the health insurance sector, including delayed claims and disputes over hospital billing. The regulator is also exploring linking hospital reimbursements to performance scores, incentivizing efficiency and compliance.
The scheme is being developed in consultation with industry bodies such as the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and leading hospital and insurance executives. It forms part of IRDAI’s broader efforts to streamline health insurance operations, simplify products, and enhance transparency in India’s rapidly growing healthcare sector.
Analysts believe the scorecards will empower consumers while pressuring underperforming insurers and hospitals to improve service standards.
