Mumbai, April 2, 2026: India has commenced its annual Prevention of Blindness Week, observed from April 1 to 7, aimed at raising public awareness about eye health and preventing avoidable vision loss. The week-long campaign highlights the importance of early detection, regular eye check-ups, and adopting healthy lifestyle habits to maintain good vision.
The theme for 2026 is “Uniting for a Glaucoma‑Free World”, focusing on one of the most silent yet serious causes of blindness. Experts warn that glaucoma often progresses without symptoms and can result in irreversible vision loss if not detected early.
According to ophthalmologists, the leading causes of vision impairment include cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, refractive errors, vitamin A deficiency, and age-related eye conditions. Chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure, along with prolonged screen exposure and smoking, increase the risk of developing serious eye problems.
Medical professionals urge people to watch for early warning signs such as blurred vision, difficulty seeing at night, halos around lights, eye pain, or sudden loss of vision. They recommend regular eye examinations even for those who believe their eyesight is normal.
Preventive measures emphasized during the campaign include:
-
Routine eye check-ups for early detection of eye diseases
-
Balanced nutrition rich in leafy greens, fruits, and essential vitamins
-
Control of chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension
-
Protection from UV exposure through quality sunglasses
-
Limiting screen time and following the 20-20-20 rule to reduce eye strain
-
Avoiding smoking and using protective eyewear during high-risk activities
Children, adults, and senior citizens are all advised to follow age-appropriate eye care practices, with screening camps and awareness programs being organized across communities.
The observance of Prevention of Blindness Week underscores the message that many cases of vision loss are preventable, and public awareness can play a pivotal role in safeguarding eye health nationwide.
