Healthcare professionals recommend a gradual transition to screen‑free mealtimes rather than abrupt bans, which can cause resistance in young children. Key strategies include: 

  • Gradually reduce screen time — Begin by turning off the device midway through meals and increasing screen‑free time each day. 

  • Replace screens with engagement — Encourage conversation, simple games or storytelling at the table to keep meals interactive and enjoyable. 

  • Involve children in mealtime routines — Letting kids help set the table, pick food options or talk about what they are eating can strengthen their focus on food rather than devices. 

  • Lead by example — Parents putting away their own phones during meals sets a strong behavioural cue for children to follow. 

Experts emphasise that consistency is vital: establishing a predictable rule like “no devices for everyone at mealtimes” works best for encouraging lasting habits.
